1. Use Tinker Tool (http://www.bresink.de/osx/) to pin the Dock to top or bottom, right or left of your display. There are lots of other great features of this freeware.
2. Transparent Dock (http://versiontracker.com/moreinfo.fcgi?id=11295&db=mac) lets you adjust the transparency of your Dock, and choose a color for the arrow indicating open apps. Freeware; includes a restore option.
