1. Use Tinker Tool (http://www.bresink.de/osx/) to pin the Dock to top or bottom, right or left of your display. There are lots of other great features of this freeware.

2. Transparent Dock (http://versiontracker.com/moreinfo.fcgi?id=11295&db=mac) lets you adjust the transparency of your Dock, and choose a color for the arrow indicating open apps. Freeware; includes a restore option.

If you're looking to set Dock transparency and color in 10.2, you'll need Application Enhancer (http://www.versiontracker.com/moreinfo.fcgi?id=15894&db=mac) and ClearDock (http://www.versiontracker.com/moreinfo.fcgi?id=15895&db=mac) from Unsanity. I like the way you can set a subtle border, something you couldn't do with Transparent Dock.

There's a new (1.2) release of ClearDock which lets you set the application active triangle color. :)
