Welcome to Darwin?

So, through some magical stroke of dumb luck I've managed to score a hand-me-down TiBook! :D

This is my first taste of the Mac OS. I have a couple books on order but nothing in hand yet so I've been playing around trying to gather as much general information as possible.

My question is, when I open Terminal.app I do not see Welcome to Darwin! only a prompt as localhost in my home directory, why is this?

Edit /etc/motd as root with the editor of your choice, or check the contents of ~/.tcshrc.

When you installed MacOS X did you also installed the BSD subsystem?


From man motd:

<<The file /etc/motd is normally displayed by login(1) after a user has
logged in but before the shell is run. It is generally used for impor-
tant system-wide announcements. During system startup, a line containing
the kernel version string is prepended to this file.

Individual users may suppress the display of this file by creating a file
named ``.hushlogin'' in their home directories.>>

Instead of "Welcome to Darwin" you can make a more exciting message by editing /etc/motd with a Unix editor such as pico or vi.

I noticed that I never got the MOTD until I changed the terminal preferences (the shell tab) from "Use this shell:" to "Use default shell for this user". Both of which were tcsh, btw.

Sao, I have not done a clean install yet. When you ask if I installed the BSD subsystem is this something that is not included during a typical install from the restore CDs?

the BSD Subsystem is part of the default install. i think you have to turn it off if you go to the "customize" screen of the OS X Installer.
