I'm seriously thinking about buying the new 30gig iPod but I want to be able to rip my cds directly to the iPod and not take up space on my iMac. Anyone know how to do this?

I don't think you can.

Basically, you plug your iPod in and it syncs with iTunes. If the songs aren't in iTunes, then they aren't gonna get copied onto the iPod, hence the space is taken up on your iMac's HD.

However, having said that, since iTunes stores only a link to the files, what would happen if you were to copy the files onto the iPod's HD, and then drag those into iTunes on your iMac? Hmmm... Something to try :)

I concur. It's not possible to rip directly to the iPod unless you iTune musc folder was stored on it through it's function as an external hard drive. And then you wouldn't be able to listen to the songs you've ripped through it.

I disagree.

You can tell iTunes NOT to sync with the iPod. Then you can rip your CDs to iTunes, manually drag the songs you want over to the iPod (still in iTunes), and then safely delete the songs from your iMac.
