Since my iPod's battery duration is much longer than my PowerBook's, I'd prefer to have my iPod running off of its own juice while it's plugged in as an external hard drive. Is there a way I can disable the power portion of my Firewire port, or force the iPod to run on its battery? I'm guessing I could do something like 6-to-4, male/male adapter, 4-to-6, to connect the data but not the power, but that's not viable given that I don't have the cables or the inclination.

That is probably why sony use the 4 pin port on their laptops.

My guess would be that the iPod always runs on its own battery whether it's plugged into Firewire or not. The Firewire connection circuit probably has a diode in it somewhere to prevent its connection from doing anything other than charging the iPod's battery.

But that's the point, he doesn't want the Powerbook's battery to be charging the iPod's battery.
