View Full Version : Booting from my iPod

Sorry if this thread is elsewhere--I searched and couldn't find anything. I want to get a bootable OS X system on my iPod with some utilities. I tried (very amateurishly) to CCC a system onto my iPod, but my computer gets a fuzzy apple screen and won't reboot *at all* until I use a utility disk. Do I need to save my mp3s and partition? Fireware card unbootable? Any thoughts?

Thanks

5 GB ipod attached via a firewire PCI card to a 1999 Lombard Powerbook with extra RAM, 10.2.6 system

Well, I don't have an iPod, but I do have an external Firewire drive that I use to boot OS 9 systems, including my bronze Powerbook.

I don't know of a good way to make a bootable OS X system, other than CCC it. I don't think there is a good way. I wonder if you could try installing OS X onto your iPod .. does it show up in the Finder like a normal drive?

From macworld: (http://www.macworld.com/2002/05/secrets/mac911/)
As we used to say in the funked-up seventies, "Ain't no thang." (For those of you who aren't hep to this jive, it means "this isn't a big deal.") Just attach the iPod to your FireWire Mac. If iTunes 2 doesn't pop open on its own, launch it. In the iPod Preferences window, select the Enable FireWire Disk Use option.

Now restart your Mac. Once your iPod has mounted, insert an OS installation disc (either Mac OS 9.2 or OS X) and run the installer. When the installer asks where you'd like to install the operating system, navigate to the iPod and click on Continue to step through the rest of the installation. When you want to boot from your iPod, plug it into your Mac. Once it's mounted, select it as the start-up disk in OS 9's Startup Disk control panel or in OS X's Startup Disk system preference. Restart your Mac to boot from the iPod.

Thanks--yeah I'd tried this before and tried it again. FIrewire disk is enabled, I installed on the iPod, but still when I try to boot from it, my Mac shows the gray apple startup screen and then freezes with a band of static. The iPod acts as if it's not connected to anything at that point. Here's the weird part: even when I remove the firewire card and iPod and reboot, it freezes with the band of static! I have to reboot to my OS9 utilities disk, choose the hard drive system and reboot.

Is it somehow calling for the firewire drive, but can't seem to see it on reboot? It's very odd.

THanks!

Have you ever booted off of a firewire device, other than the iPod?

Good point; no, I haven't. This is using a firewire PCI card, not a port, since my machine isn't built with Firewire. I suspect my machine simply can't do it. Any thoughts?

Anyhow, is this Lombard defective or is this model really not supposed to boot up from a PC slot drive? I've read nothing to that effect online so far, and the dealer doesn't know one way or the other.

Thnx,

Hi Bob;

I'm afraid I'm not going to be any more help than your dealer. I have zero experience with PC Card hard drives.

I know the Lombard won't boot from a FireWire drive through a ForeWire PC card adapter, but then neither will a WallStreet, and you say the PC Card drive is bootable, so that's not it.The grayed out icon in the Startup Disk Control Panel is not a promising sign.

Re: The Lombard Mystery

From Bob Friede

It turns out that none of the PB's from the Lombard on up can boot from anything attached via pc slot. Fortunately I was able to return the machine for credit. I'm utterly spoiled by using pc cards as utility drives. So convenient!

I think you're SOL.

I sometimes have trouble getting mac's to boot off of any firewire drive. theoretically the ipod should be able to be used as a boot up device. however, i have never tried it.

Yes, I think I have my answer. Too bad--but this computer's on its last legs, anyway. Thanks again.

Macs without a built in firewire port do not support booting to a firewire device.
Since you are using a PC card, the lombard will not boot to the ipod or any firewire drive connected via a PC card.
But hey the lombard has an hd30 scsi port right? I just know you have an old scsi drive lying around you can use ;)

after installing a fresh OSX on your ipod... reboot and hold the <option> key down during the startup process.

you should see two disc images ? your main computer and ipod fw drive.

select ipod

My girlfriend has an old powerbook without native firewire AND without the factory installed CD drive. The firmware does not support booting from the PC card firewire adapter or over ethernet. In order to any maintince we have to visit a friend who has an old SCSI CD burner.

Is your internal CD drive also broken, or is there some other reason you don't want to use it as a startup volume?
