I don't know why this started happening because I take amazing care of my iPod and because it is encased in one of those iSkin protection sleeves, so my iPod is REALLY protected.

Any way, like the Subject says, all of a sudden the iPod freaked out and whenever I plug the headphone jack in it will shut it's self off and restart (the apple logo will pop up). Then one of two things happens... 1) it will present me with the main menu and the iPod will work fine because the headphones are already plugged in OR 2) it will pop up the little "no battery left" symbol which doesn't makes sense because the iPod has been charging all night and has a complete charge. Also if I then go and manually restart the iPod the batteries will be full again.

This is really pissing me off and I hope that it is a software problem rather than a hardware problem (btw, I got the iPod in December of 2002).

So, does it sould like I need to reformat my iPod or should I just send it to apple because this appears to be a hardware problem? Thanks in advance!

I seem to remember there being a problem with some iPods where the battery wouldn't charge for long enough after a while, but since you bought yours only last December that shouldn't be the case.

Have you reset it with the two keys? (I forget which.) Have you tried resetting it to the factory defaults using the iPod software? (Save your files off the disk through the Finder first!)

Alternatively, post your question on Apple's support forums and see if one of the Apple techs can give you an answer. Mention the warranty thing and they will probably suggest you take it back to get it changed.

Press the play button and the menu button simultaneously to reset the iPod.

Thank you for your replies, but I already stated that I reset it several times using the "menu + play/pause" reset method.

"Also if I then go and manually restart the iPod the batteries will be full again."

That is what I meant by that. I called Apple because I am covered under my Powerbook's Applecare warranty for phone service and they said that they will fix it for no charge because its still under the year long warrenty period.

I have the EXACT same problem. I also keep very careful care of my iPod. A hard reset does work, but if I plug in the headphones, I get either an apple logo, or an empty battery sign (which is full on hard reset).

I noticed there is a small crack in the plastic inside my headphone jack - maybe this is causing it?

So, last night I finally got sick of this and submitted a repair request, I bought in august 02, so I am also under the warranty...hope it works out for you...
