With a Panasonic DMR-HS2 DVD Recorder one can burn DVD-R. After finalizing these are DVD-Video (General) and should therefore be compatible with Apple DVD players.

While these DVD's are successfully playable on Windows computers and consumer DVD players I am not able to play them on Apple Macintoshes.:

A PB G4/800/1 Gb RAM/ OSX.2.6 spits them out, on a PB G3 X.2.6 the disk is somtimes mounted, but looks empty, sometimes it is not recognized at all. On a G4 OS 9.2.2 the DVD icon is mounted but empty as well

Has anyone better experiences?

I would try clearing out your firmware. Reboot the machine and right as it powers up hold down the following keys on your keyboard command + option + P + R. Let the machine reboot 3 or 4 times while holding down those keys. If that does not work try all the cd's that came with that apple computer. For some reason sometimes I find that apple optical drives are picky about what they want to read and mount and what they don't. I have several bootable utility discs i have made that will not boot on every mac. There is also a drive compatability update for OS X you may want to download and try. If all else fails take it to an authorized service center.
