I´m trying to remap the period key in the numeric keypad on my spanish keyboard. In the spanish keyboard Apple uses a comma instead of a period which is not very useful. I can´t use the U.S. mapping from the keyboard preference panel because I would loose the settings for many characters like "ñ" and the accents.

I used to do this in OS 9 by editing the keyboard layouts in the system folder but in OS X i have no clue where to start.

Thanks!

See the thread below on using the keyboard to navigate.

I work a lot with numbers, and I have the same problem. Does OS X always read the 'period' in the numeric keypad as a comma, or is there a way of changing it? If not, it's going to be a real pain in the lower body area.

I'm not sure of the terminology, but the unicode based input methods used more recently in OS X use a plain text ".keylayout" file which is fairly straightforward to figure out. Perhaps you could find one on the web for "Spanish"...

But unfortunately, it looks like the standard "Spanish" keyboard layout in OS X is a part of the "Roman.bundle", which has the layout in a resource file (ie. more difficult to modify). If you still have access to OS 9 or Classic, ResEdit can still be used (after a bit of juggling) to edit resources, but I don't know of an OS X equivalent free resource editor that has a keyboard layout editor built in.

Does OS X always read the 'period' in the numeric keypad as a comma, or is there a way of changing it?
Edit: Oops, I didn't notice the date on the thread and didn't realize you weren't the original poster. In your case, you don't mention which OS version and keyboard layout you are using - some enter a ".", and others a "," from the numeric keypad, so you may be able to try out a different one ("System Preferences" > "International" > "Input Menu"). But based on your location, it looks like both of the "French" options use "," which is also a part of the "Roman.bundle". So it can be modified, but I only know how using ResEdit...
