On OS X 10.2.6 with iTunes 4.0:
I was using iTunes when it crashed (I think it "Unexpectedly quit".) When I started it up again, most of my music library was missing. That wasn't much of a problem; I just dragged ~/Music/iTunes/iTunes Music/ back into iTunes. But then I tried to connect my iPod. The Finder mounts the iPod just fine, but iTunes refuses to recognize it. I've trashed the iTunes preferences and even tried starting from a blank music library. Any ideas? I can't "restore" my iPod because I've got 15 GB of data on it and no place to copy it to. I doubt that's the problem though; the iPod itself still works fine and mounts in the Finder with no problems. I also don't want to update to iTunes 4.0.1.

another way to troubleshoot preferences is make a test user account. Does it work in the new user account? If it does, and does not work in your user account, you can more safely assume its a setting related to your user.

Indeed, you were right. I had trashed the com.apple.iTunes.*.plist files, but I had completely ignored the com.apple.iPod.plist file staring me right in the face. After renaming it, my iPod works great now. Thanks!

Perhaps I spoke too soon. I just disconnected my iPod to use it, and when I just reconnected it, iTunes did not automatically sync it. As before, the iPod shows up just fine in the Finder. Trashing the preferences doesn't seem to help anything.
