View Full Version : ARGH... Songs in Itunes can't be played on an Ipod
I have a 5GB ipod, and recently (last night) upgraded all software to 10.2.6, including ipod 1.3. I then decided to visit the Music store and purchase some songs. I downloaded four songs. When I try to sync the itunes library with ipod I get the following popup
"Some of the songs in the Itunes music library including .... were not copied to Ipod because they cannot be played on an ipod"
I'm rather annoyed, as what's the point of purchasing music if I can't play it on my Ipod.
I'm guessing either I need to download in another format, or convert the AAC files to mp3 (however it wouldn't let me do that).
Any help or suggestions will be greatly appreciated.

Did you do the Quicktime 6.2 update, that adds AAC support? I assume so, since they can play in iTunes. I'd say reinstall your iPod software and try again. I've had no problems with playing AAC or Protected AAC on my 10 GB iPod.

The last time I had this problem it was an ID3 tag issue, caveat; non-AAC files and I don't have access to the iTunes service so this may all be bulls**t.
Anyway, some songs may not have the latest ID3 tag version. Simply go to iTunes, select the songs that can't be played on your iPod then goto => Advanced=> Covert ID3 tag. I usually go for version 2.3 or upwards. Then give it a whirl.

I download songs from the Music Store all the time. It seems doubtful that they would put out a song with a bad ID3 tag. Although, I haven't bought all the songs (yet).
plmc - you never actually said if you could play the tracks in iTunes.
If everything is up to date - iTunes 4.0.1, QT 6.3, iPod 1.3 - this should all work flawlessly. You might try a restore on the iPod using the 1.3 updater. (This will erase everything on the iPod, so make sure all your tunes are in the iTunes library.)
Sorry about that, the songs do play in itunes. I will attempt to reload 1.3 now.
ok duh... I had previously downloaded 1.3 but I didn't install it or run the updater.
Thanks everyone.

I'm using the 1.2 updater < I couldn't find the 1.3 updater >..
The convert id3 tags didn't work.
Some of my old mp3 and mp2 files can't be played on ipod, but play fine in Itunes. I'm going to try to convert them to AAC and see if that does it. Really grring about this.
thanks

AAC files won't play on an iPod if you don't install the 1.3 update.
This update was pretty easy to find on Apple's Support site (http://www.info.apple.com).
