I have a 5gig iPod and ever since I got it I would have to keep the volume around 70 to 80 % or it would simply be TOO loud. Then it broke and I sent it to Apple to be fixed. They were very kind and gave me a refurbished 5 gig iPod, but for some reason the volume is very very low.
With my first iPod I would not be able to hear a damn thing when the volume was around 80%, but with the new one I can hear newspapers rustling on the train and the wind passing by me when I bike ride and I keep it at 100%!
Now before you go nuts on this thread please note the following: I have the volume "sound check" on, yes my iPod software is the most current, both iPods were running v1.3 of the software and I have been using the same headphones the whole time (the standard issue Apple ones).
I hope there is an answer :)
Actually, try with Sound Check off. That may make a difference. Maybe try different head phones.

Tried it with the sound check off and that only changed it to what it should be, no significant change.
Tried it with my Sony MDR-V600 (one step under the DJ grade headphones) and aside from sounding better and havning better bass it wasn't LOUD, and I know that these headphones can get very loud because I DJ with them.
So let me get this straight, two different iPods are very quiet sounding? Could it be your actual song files that are quiet for some reason?

No. The original iPod (iPod number 1) sounded very loud, when I sent it to Apple to be fixed it came back sounding quiet (iPod number 2). Both of them had the same software on them.

FYI, The most current version of iPod software is 2.0.1.

the 2.0.1 software wouldn't work on a 5GB iPod, so the 1.3 is the latest in this case. the 2.0.1 software is for the "new" 10/15/30GB "3G" iPods.

Yeah, I was just about to say that. So still no volume info?

The volume of songs on my 5gig iPod depends on the song and on the medium I'm listening to them thru. In my car, a song might sound very low, nearly impossible to hear, but the same song thru headphones is O.K. I keep my volume somewhere around 50% and it's fine. I'd say you need to call Apple.

back when i had my 5GB iPod i would get a "static buildup" over time that would diminish the sound quality. for a while i thought it was file corruption - then i tried a hard reset (hold down "Menu" "Play" and the center select button at the same time - wait for the Apple icon to appear, then release. resetting or "rebooting" the iPod did the trick in that case. but you've done that already, right?

I hate when it comes down to that...
... but alas, it must be done.
