I'm looking to get me an external hard drive, but I'm thinking why not get an ipod instead, it has more than enough capacity for my needs and I can listen to all my tunes on the move. Are there any down points to using an ipod as data backup?

None, really. The more "data" you store, the fewer songs you can put on, and vice versa. Just don't go about reformatting the iPod, apparently it's a P.I.T.A. to get the iPod "OS" (if you will) back on it.
I use my 5 gig iPod for my backup needs. It works very well, also being Firewire it is really fast. I do, however, wish I had a bigger iPod now. Maybe someday I will get the newest 15 GB one.
