Slow service with UFS disks.

If an OS 9 client accesses a folder on the server that has many (500+) sub folders, and the disk that the folder is on is formatted UFS, it is very slow to display the folder list, about 30 seconds for the client window to redraw. The same folder on an HFS formatted disk takes about 4 seconds to display. An OS X client is slow on first accessing the folder but is fast thereafter. This is a problem for us as the OPI software that we use requires UFS format disks. Any ideas?

I am sorry I can`t help but just wanted to confirm problems with UFS I had. I tried to install OS X Server with UFS format as I did not need OS 9 and thought UFS would be a better/more solid disk format as this is standard on other UNIX systems. I had big problems a.o. installation took ages and the server seemed very slow. I also did not get Lasso5 to run correctly. Upon restart I would loose all access to the boot drive and tried several reinstalls. When I finally gave up and reformated with HFS+ I was suprised how much quicker the installation process went. I could hardly believe it was the same machine I was installing on. The server also runs "much" faster. Especially installing upgrades was a breeze compared to UFS. I found some info on Apples support pages warning about UFS format (of course after I found that out myself!) but I am disappointed that there was no better information stated clearly before I tried UFS. But I think this could be a related issue in your case on remote servers also.
