Hi all,

I'm anxiously waiting for my 30GB iPod to arrive and would like to find out more about what I am able to do with it. I searched the forum and here are some of the outstanding questions I have, if its been covered I'd really appreciate it if you could direct me to the appropriate link, thanks! :)

1) Transfer of MP3 from Cube to Pbook: I *need* to get my tunes from my cube to pbook and I've read that some guys have experienced a complete wipe of their iPod (gulp). Should I transfer the entire library manually to my iPod and then on to the Pbook?

2) Partition iPod: I'd like to CCC a working installation of OSX on the iPod just in case my pbook fails - should I partition my iPod in that case (or is it even possible/advisable to do so)? I'm thinking that partitioning the iPod would be neater and easier to CCC.

3) Notes/Cal/Addresses: If I choose to sync these with my iPod on my Cube (primary machine) would I be able to easily sync it to my Pbook as well since that will be my new primary machine.

4) Scandisk/maintainence etc: Is the scandisk feature of the iPod somewhat similar to the Disk Utility in OSX? If so, how necessary is it to run them? Just want to keep my precious in sound (pun intended) condition :)

Thanks much in advance! ;)

There are a variety of ways you can accomplish this. You can use firewire target mode on the iBook and connect it to your cube and manually copy the iTunes library over, you can copy it manually onto your iPod and then to the iBook, you can connect both computers with an ethernet cable and copy the library through file sharing, or you can sync the iPod and the Cube and then use some 3rd party software to copy the music from your iPod to your iBook. The choice is yours.

I would not suggest trying to partition the iPod as this will require you erasing the iPod and thereby loosing the OS that the iPod uses as it's interface to do what it's intended to do, play songs. From what I've read this can be a hassle to get put back on the iPod. Personally I would just CC your iBook onto the iPod (it appears as an external drive on your desktop when you plug it in). You won't see any of it when using the iPod as it's intended (music).

Hi Yellow,

I was thinking of perhaps using a 3rd party app to transfer the music but am apprehensive that once I dock my ipod with the Pbook iTunes will automatically erase it (at least from what I've read so far it sounds like it)

I won't partition then if that's the case, no wonder I never found any discussion related to that :D

thanks much!

This I cannot comment on since I have a 1st gen iPod with any assurance. I doubt though that it'll completely erase the iPod when you plug it into another computer.

It doesn't erase it. It actually will ask you if you want to "register" your ipod to the new machine, thereby erasing it. Just say no, and the ipod will be left alone (well not completely... it'll be recharged =) )
