Connecting iPod (3. gen) to mac

Is it possible to connect a 3. gen iPod to a Mac via usb2 pcmcia-card or do you have to have a built-in Firewire port?

The system is PowerBook G3, 233 Mhz, OS X.

I believe the iPod connects via FireWire (from its dock) to the Mac. Connecting to Windows is via USB2 or FireWire. Lemme check...
