I just switched over to using Fire with 0.30.b (http://www.versiontracker.com/moreinfo.fcgi?id=8933&db=macosx). I like having the centralized program for all of the different services, and fire no longer uses 30 some odd percent of my processor while idle. There are some limitations to the AIM service, though I believe those are imposed by AOL and not by Fire (Can't get away messages, no file transfer). I used to use AOL's AIM program, along with IXQ for ICQ, and never used Yahoo or MSN.

What does everyone else use, if any?

Well, I currently use Adium. It is an awesome freeware AIM client that is customizable in EVERY possible way. It has 3 different view modes(Everything in a seperate window, Buddy list in its own window and all IMs in a tabed window, or everything in a tabed window(SAVES A LOT OF SPACE ON SCREEN!)). I can't emphasize how much I love this program!

The downside? I believe Adium is the reason that I have received my first 4 kernel panics. I don't know if it's just an adium bug or it's an 'Adium' with 'OS 10.1.3'. Who knows... I believe it is a sound bug(Beacuse the kernel panics say something about a sound.plist or something or other.)

Anyways,

Just my two pesos,

I really like Adium too. On Thu this week I noticed my Adium needed updating, so I dl and updated. Now I can no longer change/save and Away Messages in the Away Msg Editor. I can only tab into the body (clicking with mouse will not work) an dthen when I type - I just gett beeps - no text. So unfortunately I have had to stop using Adium for now until I solve that problem.

Proteus is like Adium's big brother - the benefits of Proteus are that it lets you connect too and monitor almost every chat service out there - AOL, ICQ, Yahoo, MSN, etc.

Another nice AOL only client is called Fire. I really like Fire also - as it is nice and slimmed down clinet, but I don't use it as there is some sort of typing delay in it that causes what you type to be slightly delayed before appearing...very annoying.

i have used Fire for a while, and really like the .30b release a lot. it is a huge improvement. i like having the Fire console list who logged on and off. very nice new release.

i tryed Proteus 1.5 as it just went through a major revision. but i must say i like the preferences in Fire a lot. the GUI of Proteus leaves something to be desired as well.

i sure hate having AIM and ICQ both open. and now with Fire .30b, its usable enough i dont have to.
