I am using OS X Server 10.1.3 and realized now I might be just as happy (or happier) with plain OS X. This is mainly a webserver, FTP, Lasso5 and Zope server, PHP... I set up Crush FTP wich is far superior to OS X Servers FTP. I wanted plain FTP without all the extra folders OS X Server creates for the users. Crush FTP took care of that! Now I want to give some website owners TELNET (SSH) access to their webfolders for stopping and starting servlets, PHP a.o. Setting up users in Server Admin makes a user with all these annoying folders (Movies, Music, Pictuers, Library, Documents....). I don`t need or want that. I just want plain SSH access to the users webfolder and nowhere else. This seems much easier in Linux. Or am I a super-newbie? Any help would be very appreciated on the road to UNIX enlightment.

I think you're right, I think for what you want you don't really need OS X Server. Mainly what OSXS gives you are GUIs and default settings for setup and configuration. Since those are giving you results you don't care for, you'll need to go another way.

NetInfo is the repository on OS X for user account information (as well as a bunch of other stuff). Look for tips on configuring things in NetInfo. There's one right on macosxhints about adding a user from the console.

I don't have the link handy but Apple has a PDF file about NetInfo which should be goog background reading.
