View Full Version : I used to run DNS, do I still want to?

When I had my web server on OS 9, I ran MacDNS on it as a caching only DNS server for my little home network (2 servers, 1 desktop, 1 notebook).

Now that I'm on a Unix box, I want to know more before I'm willing to run a DNS, because I don't want to do something dumb and dangerous.

Here are some questions

1: Is BIND the right software to run or is it just the default, with better stuff out there?
2: Is there a good graphical config tool for BIND for OS X?
3: If my ISP is canonical for my domain, is it a problem to have DNS running on the server?
4: Does a local caching DNS let me turn on lookup in the httpd.config with impunity?

Let me know what I should or shouldn't do here. I'd like a faster DNS resolution and that seems to indicate a local server, but I don't want to do it if it's more pain that it's worth...
