I want to preorder Panther, but would like to hear from anyone who could tell me if it will run faster than Jaguar on my Pizmo 400Mhz, 392MB RAM machine. I feel like I did when I used to use Windows. I was always buying the next version in hopes it would run better and be more reliable, but it never helped. I then decided to give up on it, and switched to the Mac when the "Fruit Flavored" iMacs came out (circa 1998 I think). All in all I've been much happier, except for OSX (10.0, 10.1, 10.2) being a semi-slouch on my G3 hardware. Fortunately each release has been faster than the previous, and reports are that Panther is faster still. I guess I just need some assurance before I fork over the cash for it -- fortunately I can get the Government Employee discount, so it isn't as bad as it could be. Thanks in advance!

I think you'll need to wait for a week or so after it's out before there are enough data points with the actual release version to really know. Early reports sure have sounded promising.

I'll probably have it installed on a couple G3 machines by the 26th so I'll put up my thoughts.

edit - moving to Xperiences, since that's what it's asking for...

I have no personal knowledge, but I've read some reports that the perceived speed of the fall 2001 iBooks is much improved by Panther.

I was running the developer preview on a 400Mhz slot load iMac with 128MB of ram and it did ok, it was no worse than 10.2

Some things took a while, but more RAM would be a big help. I usually install previews on a firewire drive so I can test it on a few machines. It worked fine on an eMac, iMac, and 450DP g4.

Thank you, tncook. At least it is no worse than 10.2:rolleyes:, so I guess it will be worth it for the extra features, and the final version should be faster than the developer preview (I would imagine?) unless you had the version that went GM.

I have been using it since the WWDC release on a 400MHz Ruby iMac and it is much faster than Jaguar.
The finder is snappier. So much so that I didn't want to go back to Jaguar in the begining when I was having stability problems. Since then I have installed the latest Panther builds on a 500MHz iBook and a 350 'Blueberry' iMac (all computers have 640 RAM) and it has been much faster than Jaguar. I am still using 7B80 (I have 7B85 sitting on my desk but have not found any reason to install it yet)
Just my 2 cents, opinions may vary.
