deleting things

As a novice to X, could someone point me in the right direction. In the old 9 days if you wanted to delete a file of file you dragged it to the trash. Now, so many files etc can't as easily be deleted as I am told I don't have the right to do so. Man I own the damn computer. (joke). Is there somewhere a book or set of simply instructions to show me how to do the deleting thing.

Well, first make sure you should be throwing the thing away (as in it isn't a part of the system), then you can either do sudo rm /path/to/file, or download BatChmod (from versiontracker) and use the force empty trash option.
