Has anyone else observed a significant decrease in general performance when OS X is installed on a UFS formatted partition? I have a G4 400 PB w/512MB RAM running 10.1.3.

Ever since the OS X Public beta days this has been the case.

They seem to have provided UFS support for those who *need* it... but it does not seem to be the recommended thing to do.

Heck, it does not seem like any/many of the folks at Apple are actually doing this...

The deal is they've optimized HFS+ for OS X, whereas UFS is based on an obsolete build. About the only people who actually need UFS are some systems developers building software which requires case-sensitivity. Apparently building perl from scratch is such a beast.

This was based on a discussion by Louis Gerbarg, Apple Darwin Engineer. I hope I got it right. ;)
