View Full Version : Printing In Classic
Hi. I am unable to print in classic applications. I'm using an HP DeskJet 970Cse. When I go into chooser, and highlight the correct printer driver, no available printers show up for me to use. Any ideas on how I can get the classic chooser to recognize my printer?

3 thoughts off the top:
1.Make sure the HP extension: hp deskjet v4.3 is in your your Classic system folder's "Extensions" folder.
2. Bump the memory in the Desktop PrintMonitor extension to 500.
3. Bump the memory in the PrintMonitor extension to 500.
Try it again.
Note: if its still not working we'll have to start checking for the USB extensions in your system folder.

Wow, I'm impressed. Thank you so much for taking the time to help with my classic printing problem, and thanks for it working!

Okay, this is really weird. Now the chooser is back to not seeing the DeskJet as being there. I increased the memory for those two apps, and I verified that the DeskJet extension was in the right folder (interestingly, it has a space at the beginning of it's name).
Any further ideas?

If it worked once your USB extensions are probably alright. I would bump the memory up in PrintMonitor and Desktop PrintMonitor again. Try say 2000 for each.

Increased the memory again--even increased the memory for chooser this time. My printer still doesn't show up in the Chooser when I click on its driver. Any further ideas?

Let's approach from another direction.
1. Boot from the 9 system folder you are using for Classic.
2. Trash the HP deskjet extension.
3. Trash the HP desktop printer.
4. Trash the HP printer preferences.
5. Download and install the latest HP Deskjet (http://www.versiontracker.com/moreinfo.fcgi?id=10920&db=mac).
6. Restart in 9.
7. Create a new deskjet desktop printer.
8. Test it out.
9. Boot back into X.
10. Test from X.
Let us know what happens.

After installing and successfully testing out the printer when booting from OS 9, I booted into X and tried it in classic. No luck, I get an error message saying that the printer is not available. I can also not select it in the Chooser when clicking on its driver.
This is frustrating

I have a Lexmark printer that worked perfectly in OSX but in classic mode gave me a message that no printer had been installed. My only solution was to download separate OS 9 drivers. I can now print in classic mode; however, printing is MUCH SLOWER and I have fewer print options (e.g. I can'e elect to print color images in black ink). I wish that we could use OS X for everything. I think that OS X works more efficiently than 9.2 does in classic mode.

I have just purchased an HP photosmart 1215 and have attempted to load it in both
the os X an Classic (9.2) environments. The X side works fine.. but the classic side is
driving me nuts!
When I finish installing the driver software, it starts dropping HP printer icons all
over my desk... I had over 50 before my finder crashed! I had not even chosen
it in the chooser yet! As a matter of fact, when I tried to choose it, I could see it
listed, I could highlight it before I closed the chooser.. but when i opened the
chooser again, it was gone from the list!
I am running an 266Mhz imac. The printer is connected via USB (and as I mentioned,
it works fine from the X side). The software is the most recent from the HP site.
HP site support sent me a note saying I should contact Apple... ugh!
thanks in advance!!!

Try removing your hard disk icon from the dock.
