Help,

I want to have a folder on a mac running panther that a group can have access to remotely but not be visable to the public. Is there some quick and simple primer on how to do deal with permissions.

In the old days with os9 I could set up a folder on our administative assistants computer and call it "lab access" and share it and give a group called lab read/write access to it. Then I would create a bunch of users a drag them into the lab group. With osX you have to create a user account with all their sub directories for each person in the group, but I need a common folder where I can allow read/write access for everyone. It seems like the documents folder at the same level as the applications folder would be an ideal place to do this but I can only see that folder remotely if I log using the owner (my) account.

I tried to set up a shared access folder in the users folder by giving access to various levels (wheel, etc) and created a couple of administrator users but I can never get everyone to have equal read write access to the folder remotely.

Would it be better to create a disk partition (can I do that with Panther without havng to reformat the drive)? Can you make partitions visable to other uses with accounts? I would like to avoid giving out admin priviledges to allow access to one folder.

I am willing to drop in to terminal mode if there is not a way to do this from the get info permissions window.
