I am considering installing OSX. My machine is 350 MHz with 576 Mb RAM. It has two harddisks, a 40 Gb and 200 Gb (of which it will only read 128 Gb).
Right now it is running waaaaayy slow, running OS 9.1, but I haven’t done any defragmentation or maintenance for quite a while.
Will it handle Panther? If so, what should I do to optimize things before installing a new OS?
P.S. We have successfully installed OSX (10.2.8) on our turquoise G3 (300 MHz and 704 Mb RAM). Really sped things up!

Gotcha. Glad to see G3 is on the list, and my specs are well within limits. Thanxx!

After an iMac firmware update, my blueberry iMac is happily running Panther.
I would love to get in on my iBook as well, but the CD drive isn't working.

Rusto,
I am curious - do you recommend take the step from Jaguar to Panther? What are the main advantages that you’ve found?
Just asking... ...because I’ve almost always been slow to upgrade.

If for nothing else, the difference in Finder speed between Jaguar and Panther has been worth the $129.

I have been using OSX 10.1 since Mar '02 on my G4/350 with 740 MB and two hard disks of 10 and 30 GB. I have just upgraded to Panther lately. It is a great improvement provided you have more RAM.
My advice is to check whether you need to upgrade your ROM first before the installation.
Remember to add more RAM if you want better performance with Panther.
