hey all,

I finally have my ibook in!! very nice and all....but my girlfriend has a windows xp laptop and we both need the internet a lot.
Our modem only accepts one ip or something so we can only go on the internet one at the time.

I don't have a router only a hub....but that still doesn't work (router would I know...but I really don't have any money at the moment).

Is it possible to put the ethernet cable from the modem in my ibook and connect the windows laptop through ip-over-firewire to the internet???

I just tried it and I have all the sharing on and the ip over firewire works and the ibook goes online without a problem....but the windows computer doesn't....and I don't really know much about windows networking if it comes to ip over firewire and stuff....

If anybody can help me I will worship you the rest of my life!!! =))

(Just like I worship the makers of IbookScreenEnhancer!!)

Tnx people!!!

laterz!
Skee-tone.

How do you have your IP addressing setup? Is the XP laptop setup to get an IP automatically? When everything is connected do an ifconfig from the iBook terminal and tell me what your fw0 and en0 IP addresses are and from windows XP goto start > run and type cmd <enter> then at the dos prompt type ipconfig /all and tell me what your IP address and Default gateway addresses are. Once I have this info I might be able to help more.

Also do you have internet sharing turned on on the iBook?

Ibook ifconfig:

lladdr 00:0a:95:ff:fe:b3:21:86

windows xp ipconfig :

Connection specific DNS Suffix . :
IP Adress.....................................: 192.168.0.2
Subnet Mask...............................:255.255.255.0

Is that all you need?

ah and yes I got internet sharing on.
I gave the windows computer that ip 'cause I couldn't get to get it to work with dhcp...

Tnx for the fast reply!!

Im going to guess the iBook is not connected to the internet right now because en0: does not have an IP.

Also you said file sharing works over firewire? Your iBook has a firewire address of 192.168.2.1 while your XP machine has a 192.168.0.2 which means they should not be able to communicate. Also without a Default gateway adress on the XP machine you will never get out to the net. I had this working at one point and was able to get an IP from my iBook to the windows machine. What are your setting on the iBook for connection sharing? The drop down menu should be set to ethernet and fw0: or whatever your firewire connection is called should be check marked.

Let me know if this is what you have.

right now (and already the whole day) my ibook is online (I'm on it now) and I can also connect to the windows computer by typing smb//:192.168.0.2 in the connect to server thingy.

and yeah...the sharing is set to ethernet and FireWire
ethernet for the internet and firewire for the windows computer.

sorry....I just tried to connect to the windows computer to check if it really did work...but no it doesn't....
It only worked if I wasn't connected to the internet with the ibook...

Tnx again!!!

OK, I missed inet 80.4.62.66 the 1st time, which is your modem address.

Set the XP box back up for DHCP and turn your iBooks firewall off if it's on. Check the XP machines ip via ipconfig /all and see what you get. should have a 192.168.2.* address with a default gateway of 192.168.2.1 if not run ipconfig /release then ipconfig /renew followed by a ipconfig /all and see what you have.

Let me know what the outcome is. If this doesnt work I will fire up my windows laptop and set this up myself again.

tnx m8,

I've just been gone for the weekend...so sorry that I was suddenly gone.
I've just been disconnected from the internet for a short while so I can't give it a try now...but probably I can tomorrow.
Thank you very much!!!

I'll let you know when it works and when it doesn't.
