Recently, my son discovered that you can set your desktop picture by dragging an image from an iPhoto library to the image well on the Desktop Preference window. This means that even if you don't have a digital camera, iPhoto can be useful in managing images on your computer. He imported all the image files (including Desktop pictures) on his computer into iPhoto, then organized them into different libraries. This makes it easy to view your desktop picture options, and to reset your picture by dragging the image as described above.

You can also drag images from the Finder, SNAX, and I suppose most other folder browsing apps (like Graphic Converter--haven't tried this, however).

--------------

Here are a couple of sites where I've found some great images. I like space-related ones.

Earth Observing System (http://eospso.gsfc.nasa.gov/eos_homepage/dp/) has a variety of images of the earth as seen from various satellite imaging devices.

NASA images (http://www.space.com/php/multimedia/downloads/wallpapers/) has another nice collection.

------------

Another other hints on managing desktop pictures and good places to find some?

Go to versiontracker.com (http://versiontracker.com) and do a search for Desktop Pictures. The results will show several apps that change the desktop pictures at log-in or specified times. This feature isn't available on OS X like it was in OS 9, where you could drag a folder into the Desktop picture well and it would randomly show an image from that folder when you booted up.

ChangeDesktop is truly wonderful. freeware. set and forget. coalesces pictures from multiple directories... recognizes new images in a dir and reconfigs itself on the fly. ha!

hi,

i have written a small thingie just to play around with the apis that lets you choose desktop pictures from a menu next to the volume and monitor menus in the menu bar.

it's here:
www.uni-hildesheim.de/~skra0063/YAD.app.sit

this is still experimental and does not handle names with umlauts or accented characters in it. besides that, it works nicely. just double-click it ro run.

it doesn't install anything, promised.

as soon as i got some time, i'll make it a bit more advanced.

oh, "yad" is an acronym for "yet another desktop (utility/app/...)"

Hey all. Wondering where everyone gets their favorite desktop pictures. What's the best site you've found so far? Mainly I'm interested in photographs (as opposed to computer-rendered images), but all input is welcome. I'm just sick of visiting sites with forty popup ads and low-quality images.

Thanks!

MacDesktops (http://www.macdesktops.com/)

TheAppleCollection (http://www.theapplecollection.com/)

Both have significant photo desktops.

Alternatively, I like ArtMecca (http://www.artmecca.com/) where you can find some cool art images and convert them to desktops yourself.

I like ResExcellence (http://www.resexcellence.com), but they tend to have more computer generated images than photographs.

dsk, I merged your thread with an older one on the same topic so as to avoid too much redundancy on this topic and to make for a more comprehensive resource thread on this topic. You'll see your post and the responses to it above.
