Hi everyone on the new forum! I love the site proper and I find it very helpful! Glad to be in on the ground-floor.
On to my issue- first let me give my system specs because this problem I am having seems to be hardware related maybe?
-B&W G3 450, 1GB of RAM, 3 HD installed (9GB Ultra2 SCSI, 75GB & 60GB ATA)
-Each USB port out of the G3 is going to a powered, multiport USB hub, and a total of 10 USB devices are connected (this includes keyboard/mouse).
-2 PCI cards; a regular old SCSI card (this card is in addition to the original Ultra SCSI2 card that pushes the 9GB HD) and an ATI Raedon for my 2nd monitor.
Whew!
Anyway, here is what I am dealing with; 4 days ago, after experimenting with OSX in a test partition since November, I decided to backup my files & wipe the drives in order to reinstall everything differently. The difference is that now, I am making the jump full time and OSX 10.1.2 is now my main, daily OS. 10.1.2 gets the whole 9GB Ultra2 SCSI drive to reside on, and Classic 9.2.2 is now on an 8MB partition of the 60GB ATA drive (which is the slave to the 75GB ATA drive). Classic 9.2.2 is now a stripped down minimum install that runs my few remaining apps that need Classic. OSX 10.1.2 runs great on this system with no problems. The PROBLEM is when I change the startup disk to boot the computer from 9.2.2. 10.1.2 accuratly recognizes the existence of my 9.2.2 partition, and lets me choose it as the startup disk, no problem.
BUT......whenever I boot into 9.2.2, either from OSX 10.1.2 or from 9.2.2 itself, I get the flashing disk/question mark icon that tells me that my startup disk cannot be found. This never happened to me mere days ago when the setup was that I had an experimental OSX partition and my 9.1 partition. After days of experiments and head scratching, I found a way AROUND this problem, but I have of yet not found out WHY I am having the problem.
I found that while the disk/question mark icon is blinking, if I unplugged both USB ports on the back of the computer, suddenly the 60GB drive with the OS9.2.2 partition would spin-up from a state of rest. I'm guessing the computer could not find the 60GB slave ATA unless it was spinning. Then I would get the happy Mac icon, and if I waited until I saw the progress bar appear, I could then plug my USB ports back in.
So, what is the deal with this? Why would unplugging a USB hub at this crucial startup moment have anything to do with starting up? Especially since ALL of the USB devices work really well in OSX, and even in OS9 as long as I can get them plugged back in at the crucial moment.
My only guess here is that with so many hardware upgrades, updates, and expansions I have performed on this trusty B&W G3, maybe my system is using too much A/C power? Maybe that is why it seems to think that other stuff should be spun up or fully powered "before" the request for the 60GB drive which has the 9.2.2 startup disk! If anybody has ever heard of this, or has any ideas at all, please let me know! Thanks in advance...
