Context menu appallingly slow

Greetings!

Pretty much as soon as I got my G4 iBook out of the box, displaying the context menu (the right button on my external logitech mouse) is appallingly slow to display. In most cases, clicking the right mouse button on an item e.g. in finder results in the beach ball spinning for 5 seconds before the menu is displayed.

Is this completely normal in OS X?

No, it's not normal. My Logitech mouse brings up the contextual menu immediately (well, I guess there's about a quarter-second delay, but certainly not 5 seconds).

Log in to a different user (if none exists, create one). Does the same delay occur there?

Thanks for the tip! Yes, the problem persists with other user accounts as well.

Try launching your Console app (it is in /Applications/Utilities) then bringing up a contextual menu. Does anything appear in the Console simultaneously with the contextual menu?

Hmm, it seems that I may have found the culprit. A demo version of Extensis Portfolio had installed a contextual menu plugin in /Library/Contextual Menu Items/. I had later uninstalled the app, but the plugin remained.

I emptied the above directory and this seem to have improved greatly.

Neither console.log or system.log displayed anything of interest when the beach ball was spinning.

I appreciate your help tremendously anyhow.
