Does it really have to be so narrow? I would like to see it 1/2 again as wide, if not twice as wide.
It would be best if it was dynamic based on window width.

The window size is set by the controlling software (vBulletin) that runs the forum site. Modifying it would require hacking into the code for the base application itself, which I'd really rather not do -- it makes future upgrades something of a nightmare (as I'm founding out with the heavily modified macosxhints.com main site!).
I'll put your feature request in to the vBulletin team, though, as I think it's a good one!

Thank you for the info. I agree that hacking is a bad idea. No worries. I'm enjoying myself even with the small box. :D

i disagree. it is a lot harder to read long lines. think about newspapers and magazines. short columns of text easy for the eye to traverse. anyone with training in page layout learns this early. unless they missed that day.
i loathe to horiz scroll and read long lines.

 Horizontal scroll? That's not what I had in mind at all. I too, loathe the post with the picture in it a mile wide, messing up the formatting of the whole thread.
I freely admit I have no clue how the "back end" of this software operates, but my only beef is the little box when actually composing a message. Posting in a link from versiontracker almost always wraps the line, making it a bit difficult to handle.

hmm, once i paste a link, i never think about it again. the vB engine shorthands them with elipses if they are overly long.
rob,
what i would like to see is: the 'preview' of a post more closely (exactly) represent what will be finally posted, so that i can make appropriate edits to keep it within a reasonable horizontal page size.
currently, the post 'preview' uses the entire width of the browser, without the left margin 'who, where' box space represented.
