View Full Version : iMac won't power on... solution! (sometimes)

Recently I had an old G3 iMac's power supply fail on me. It is a known issue and the only fix apple had was a $300 part replacement. (not sure which one) i really just wanted my data retrieved but had to pay to fix the computer first.

So now my second G3 iMac has failed. It's a very helpless feeling... everytime I try to power it on it lights up for just a second and sometimes even teases me with half of a startup chime before it just shuts down.

I am unsure of what exact model my iMac is but it has a hole at the bottom to access memory and the airport card and it's slot loading. If you have this problem with this iMac then this solution might just be for you. (i cannot garuantee the safety of you or your equipment so attempt this at your own risk!)

Start with the iMac face down and unplugged with the rear toward you. Unlock and open the access door. Remove all memory. Down and to the left is a tiny black button. It is the battery reset button. Use a pen and hold down the button for ten seconds. Plug the iMac in. Now you want to simultaniously hold the power button and the reset button (located on the side by the ports) until you hear a long beep. The iMac should now have a flashing power button. Now comes the part that shouldn't have worked but did. While the iMac is still on you must reinsert the memory cards. This may be dangerous to you or the iMac. I didn't know or care as I needed that data and didn't have $300 for another outdated computer's reincarnation. At this point you should close the acces door, turn the computer right side up, cross your toes, and press the reset button...

aaaahhh.

If all went well you should hear a startup chime and be well on your way to transfering your data to a more stable computer. I have been running my iMac like this for about a week at a time before it shuts itself off and I have to repeat this entire process. So if you intend to actually use your problematic iMac then have it repaired. Otherwise, this works to get your data. Hope this helps someone. Good luck.

That button is sometimes called the CUDA, or the PMU reset button. Only press it once within a time period of about 15-20 seconds. Seriously.

Although holding it in for 10 seconds doesn't particularly hurt (it may increase battery usage, according to some reports), it is not necessary. Just press it once briefly. Then, as I mentioned above, don't press it again. Once only.

Once only.

"The Holy Grail" suddenly leaps to mind. :)

Cleric: [reading] And Saint Attila raised the hand grenade up on high, saying, "O Lord, bless this thy hand grenade, that with it thou mayst blow thine enemies to tiny bits, in thy mercy." And the Lord did grin. And the people did feast upon the lambs and sloths, and carp and anchovies, and orangutans and breakfast cereals, and fruit-bats and large chu...
Brother Maynard: Skip a bit, Brother...
Cleric: And the Lord spake, saying, "First shalt thou take out the Holy Pin. Then shalt thou count to three, no more, no less. Three shall be the number thou shalt count, and the number of the counting shall be three. Four shalt thou not count, neither count thou two, excepting that thou then proceed to three. Five is right out. Once the number three, being the third number, be reached, then lobbest thou thy Holy Hand Grenade of Antioch towards thy foe, who, being naughty in my sight, shall snuff it.
Brother Maynard: Amen.
All: Amen.
King Arthur: Right. One... two... five.
Galahad: Three, sir.
King Arthur: Three.

OK!! Sorry ur_beer_buddy, I am totally responsible for dragging your thread WAAAAAAY off topic.

Alternately, this post isn't a help request, so it will be moved to a more appropriate Forum.

thanks for the great hint, beer buddy! I used your 2004 advice to save my imac g3 today. I am *so* grateful.

this was my problem:
when attempting to turn on my imac, it would try to boot up but would shut itself off after several seconds. I would unplug, wait, and try to start again, with the same result over and over.

what I did:
I found this thread and another (javajoe @ http://www.macboards.com/showthread.php?threadid=7009) and put the pieces together to come up with this solution:
1. unplug machine
2. replace battery (radio shack, $15)
3. remove ram
4. press & hold PMU reset button for 3 sec (or once, briefly)
5. wait 10 seconds (it can't hurt)
6. plug in pwr cord
7. hold the mac power button & the mac reset button (on the side of the machine) simultaneously until you hear the long chime
8. quickly replace ram, then
9. immediately press the mac reset button & wait

It took longer than usual, but my mac finally booted up! yay! However, the machine was still upside-down from its recent surgery, & when I turned it right-side-up after it was fully booted, the monitor colors changed from normal to weird (the apple icon was pink instead of blue, etc). A simple restart fixed that problem, though. And since, everything has been business as usual.

Anyway, I just wanted to thank you, beer buddy, and maybe offer these steps in case anyone else runs into the same problem.
