When Classic starts up... its in an OSX window, during the startup process. does anyone know HOW to keep it in an OSX window rather than the usual classic layer..
I would rather work within a classic window (similar to the VPC usual method of doing things), than deal with this invisible layer thing.
I am assuming this is something that would be addrressed from terminal... but cant seem to find any hard info on the subject...
Any takers
Thanks in advance folks

nope. there was a method with the PB release to get OS9 layer more visible, with the finder menus and popup folders, but apple quickly squashed that.
i think they want to vanquish its face-time as much as possible.

You can still play the little game of changing the type and creator of a copy of the Classic Finder and run it as an application in Classic (like this (http://www.aboutcomp.com/~crarko/desktops/finder.html)).
It doesn't work very well and the only real way to quit it is either force quit or shutdown Classic.
But as far as running in it's own window, like VPC, that's not possible (yet).

hmm, i though they'd squelched that. i stand corrected. thanx, Craig.
so, you change a copy of the OS9 finder to type 'APPL' and launch it? do popup folders still work in this rev? and perhaps you could send it a 'quit' event?
all these are rhetorical questions left as an exercise for John.

Type = APPL, Creator = ????
Popup windows work, but overall it really doesn't work too well. I tried it once just because somebody said it couldn't be done. :)
I much prefer running Greg's Browser in classic anyway.

Well its really the Classic APPS themselves I want to keep in the window as the guy said above ... in a sort of VPC fashion.
As I said... it S T A R T S O U T as a windowed interface...!!!
Why cant it just stay that way...??

This was discussed somewhere (MacNN forums, I think) fairly heavily during the Public Beta days. The consensus was that it is not possible to keep Classic contained in that small window you see during start up.
I don't remember the details of the conversation, but I think it boiled down to the fact that the little window you see is a program named "Classic Startup". Once that is finished running, then Classic itself is running, and it knows nothing about the windowed environment that Startup uses. Or something along those lines.
You might try searching the MacNN forums (especially the OS X Archives) to see if you can find more details.
