View Full Version : Airport computer-to-computer networking?

I've got a TiBook and iBook at home with a base station. OSX 10.1, updated airport software, blah. Both machines can access the internet etc.

I set up a computer to computer network that both machines can see. Now, how can I make the machines mount each other?

I go to 'connect to server', expecting to see the other machine show up in the local network or appletalk networks, but nothing is there. Appletalk is on, file sharing, etc

I can connect both machines with ethernet, but not airport.

Do I need to configure NetInfo manager for this?

I expected to just have the other machine mount on my desktop really. It's driving me mad.

any help appreciated

Even though it is not as "friendly" as choosing from a menu of computers, you can still do it and mount their hard disks. If they can both surf the internet, then they both have an IP address. Go to System Preferences: Network and write down the IP address (xx.xx.xx.xx) of each computer. In the connect to server menu, you should type the address explicitly:

afp://xx.xx.xx.xx

I think I read somewhere that OS X to OS X connections were not always working right so it might not work.

Of course, if you set up your internet sharing with natd or a firewall, you'll have to make modifications to make sure the connection is being done properly. If things don't seem to work, use the network utility to 'ping' the other computer. If that works, then you know at least that the two computers can see each other.

Just read about this in a different forum: could this be a case where you have to setup an LDAP server on one of the machines ?

There is an application in /Applications/Utilities called Directory Setup that has a LDAP entry. If you click configure, you get a list of computers with their IP address. Could that do it ?
