Hello,
I have a 384 kbps lame encoded mp3 which I cannot play in iTunes. a 320 kbps blade encoded mp3 works fine, how can I play the larger files? Is there some other mac OSX compatible player that will do the trick or do I need to update iTunes?... Any advise would be music to my ears,

A quick search only pulled up what the iPod is capable of playing. I would guess that iTunes would be the same which is:
AAC (16 to 320 Kbps)
MP3 (32 to 320 Kbps)
MP3 VBR
Audible
AIFF
Apple Lossless and WAV

Might want to look at this:

Never used it but the rest of the software they write is top notch.

iTunes LAME encoder (http://www.blacktree.com/apps/iTunes-LAME/index.php)
I don't know what difference having the LAME encoder above installed with iTunes will make, but you could try that.
