Ok, please don't laugh but I havn't even installed the whole deal yet. I'm looking at the OS X box and reading my a** off to make sure that I do this thing right when installing. But I had a question that I can't seem to find the answer to: Where do you install the apps? I am going to partition my drive and do the OS X and classic on one and OS 9 on another and a swap on the third but I'm really uncertain where the apps go and how to get both OS' to recognize them. I'll have to use OS 9 for a while as some of my crucial apps aren't updated yet to run in OS X and in fact warn against using at all in that environ but I still want to learn it and I am familier with UNIX so... Any recommendations or links to info?

Thanks all.
Kyle

When you do the OS X install, it will create two folders for your apps (and install some bundled apps in them as well)

Applications - home for OS X apps

Applications (Mac OS 9) - kind of obvious what this one is for

Now, you don't have to keep you apps in those folders but as far as OS X apps go, certain ones will be expected to be "loose" in Applications when it comes time to update them with either Software Update or other updaters you might use.

A few good examples are Internet Explorer X, iTunes and NowContact: if you try to update them after having moved them from the Applications folder you are likely to either have 2 copies or find that the upgrade fails. This doesn't mean you can't put them where you want then move them back to the Applications folder just before applying an update.

Just to expand on rusto's excellent explanation a bit, you don't have to do anything with your existing OS 9 apps - put them wherever you wish, leave them right where they are now, etc.

OS X apps can also (generally) be installed anywhere, outside of the ones that are installed with the system -- I would leave those right where they are.

I have a separate partition for most of my OS X apps, just to make it a bit easier to reformat and reinstall OS X if necessary (fingers crossed; haven't had to to that in 18 months).

I'm actually going from 8.5 to 9 and X simultaneously on an old G3 blue with a mere 12 Gb to use so I figured I'd try the partition idea first and see if that works.

Does what your saying mean that Stuff like Photoshop 7 has two versions on it, one for OS 9 and the other for X?

Photoshop 7 is "cabonized" (at least the beta I am still using is) which means the same app will run in either 9 or X. So I'd leave it in the X Applications folder and alias it to your 9 Applications folder.

I guess the other question would then be: I have 8.6 on my drive currently and the company ordered the upgrade version for me for OS X. Can I still partition my drive? Does the upgrade require a working copy of the earlier OS to allow use of new software or is it strictly a reg code thing, like you have to have your old one to upgrade?
I've read the old debate about the partitions and such and if I pre-partition then no old copy...

You'll probably be installing OS 9.2.2, which you should do before installing OS X. If you leave things as they are without re-partitioning, it will just over-write your 8.6 System Folder. It's not an upgrade of OS 8.6, so if you want to start over, you don't have to install 8.6 first.

If you're going to start over and partition, then I'd strongly suggest putting OS X and 9.2.2 on separate partitions. In fact, if you wanted, you could have one small partition for 9.2.2/Classic; another larger one for 9.2.2 reboots, and the third for OS X. That give you all kinds of options.

I guess before I partition I'm going to try this by installing X with 9.2.2 and see what happens. I can always just install over top of everything later if I get too many problems but for now, it is a daunting task to load all of my Pre-Press stuff again so we'll see how this works.
