OK so where do I throw my pennies?
I have a Pismo 500/18GB/384MB/Airport an external 45GB Firewire hard drive, SCSI Scanner/USB Printer/Firewire CD-Burner.
Running 10.1.2 naturally.
I have waited and waited and waited as long as I possibly can before upgrading but I am at bursting point.
My initial intention was to go for the highest spec Powerbook available at the time my resistance cracked - BUT it occured to me it may be more sensible to KEEP my Pismo and get the next major desktop monster instead - (March no doubt ;) ) giving me more flexibility. Similar price too I guess.
Should I go for the big quad-G5 momma Desktop in March or will the 667 TiBook (or it's feasible successor) be enough to satisfy my speed and power cravings?
HOW much better is the new GFX card in the 667? Will it blow me away compared to my Pismo?
What would YOU do?

Boy Tyger, those are happy choices you have! :)
If I were in your shoes, I'd keep the Pismo those have something mobile, and get the "big dawg." I think you'll get more bang for your buck there than with the tiBook.

Well, I kinda have a similar question. I have a Dp 450 with a geforce 2mx card and , 768 Mb of ram... and I also have a PowerBook G4 400 with 256 MB of ram... And, well, I need to buy my extended warranty soon if I want to be able to get it on the powerbook (before february). So, should I hold off on the warranty and sell these two babies when the G5s start to appear? I don't know, will I be able to make enough money on the sale of these two machines once times comes so that i can buy the possible G5 with very little added money?
What would you guys do?

Phil, yeah I guess so. Thing is my job moves me around quite a bit... I spose the Pismo should be more than adequate for most mobile needs.
I just saw the "rumor"specs, dual 1GHz +GeForce4....tempting.
I reckon the delay has been waiting for the Geforce4 cards.
My money is on these "rumors" being 100% accurate...
Geforce 4 is out 8th Feb if my memory serves me right...
Expect new Powermacs any sec...

hmm ... been wanting a powerbook again real bad ... was wondering ... is paying $200+ more for the G3 400 worth it over a G3 333 ????
of course, I dream of the Ti but ... likely not.
A freind sort of gave me a sharp mebius 150 mghrtz thingy .... the battery is shot. hehe ... so the I can come home one day wife a powerbook and the wife wouldn't notice the difference.
I don't need the power ... I'm just looking for a powerbook that will run OSX relatively as fast as my G4 pci 400.
any ideas/suggestions would be appreciated.

hi hughes !
thanks for the advice. hmmmm didn't think of that firewire ....

well, it's not only the firewire... I was one of those certified apple monkey techs once... you know, the guys who get to work in a store and listen to crying clients on the phone who lost the contents of their hard drive... And, well, the 333-400 was nothing compared to the 400-500 pismo series... aside from firewire, the older model is not airport ready... i.e., you'll have to have a third parety product... I also think that the video performance under os X will be pretty cr5appy using the pre-pismo powerbook... after all, the pismo models have the same video card as the first generation powerbook g4s... Anyway... all in all, the pismo is a much better machine... I owned a pismo 400 once (before I convinced myself that I needed a powerbook g4 400). And, I still have a pismo 500 for work... And, well, they are great machines... But, a nice titanium is fun also... I love my titanium... But, the pismo 500 (and the 400 I used to have) is still a very capable machine under os X... and, the DVD is supported...

thanks!!! hugues!
that's what I really needed to hear .... I'm really happy with my G4 Yikes 400 but ... with a baby on the way a Ti would be puching it a bit .... hmmmm
save some more money and try for the Ti or .... pismo ....

Well... the titanium is great for taking it on the road... the screen is great... the size is great... the slot load dvd is great... but, the pismo can do pretty much the same thing...e specially if you don't need the G4's altivec... however, if you are talking about the 550/667 modles, then, you have to throw in the better graphics into the mix... but, if not, the pismo 400 is a great machine... but, the titanium does beg to be hugged...:)

:D
I'm thinking right now .... pismo 400 and the Ti 400 .... only ... everything is else is beyond reach.
I really don't need the DVD .... and don't play games that would need any real graphics ability. I do do simple graphics ... hmmm
How's the difference in screens? anything noticeable besides the size?
thanks for all the help hugues!

Well, the size is the main factor... the extra width (the height is the same resolution wise) is pretty neat. I mostly use it for programming and, well, the size makes a big difference. The screen is also much brighter, much brighter. But, the pismo has a very good quality also... You will not be disapointed by the pismo's screen. One thing however, but the laptop screen protectors OWC sells or simply make your own. Any of those models will be a great buy. But, if you can afford the Titanium, you will probably enjoy the extra battery life, the bigger screen and the smaller and lighter case. As for DVD, both the Pismo and the titanium come with it... So, it's not an issue.
