BootCD v0.3 is being uploaded to my iDisk as I speak. When it is available, the download link will be:
http://homepage.mac.com/csrstka/BootCD.dmg
This version uses the Mac OS X RAM Disk that was discovered by the folks at Clarkwood Software (http://www.clarkwoodsoftware.com), who have graciously given their blessing to use the secret in BootCD rather than getting angry at me for hacking around with their product to find it. (No, before anyone asks, I'm not going to tell you the secret. Use their product - they spent a lot of effort and resources into finding the way to create a RAM disk in OS X.)
Anyway, what's all this mean for you? It means:
- The autodiskmount script will now work from the CD, rather than requiring custom-made disk mounting scripts
- The Security Framework will now work, having write access to /tmp like it wants
- Disk Arbitration now works correctly, being able to write the disk label
- Disk utilities like Drive10 should work (in the case of Drive10, I have one definite positive report already that it works).
In other words, this is a major leap toward getting BootCD to make boot discs that are as good as the OS 9 boot disc!
One thing to note is that the hang on restart remains. I'll hopefully figure out what causes that and fix it sometime. In the meantime, use the reboot command at the Terminal or hit the hardware reset switch after choosing Restart from the menu.
I hope you all enjoy this,
Charles
