I just bought a new Maxtor DiamondMax D740X 80GB drive. I added it as a slave drive to the internal ATA/IDE controller of my QuickSilver.
Problem is: both 'Apple System Profiler' and Disk Utility' see it as a 31.5 GB!!! I brought it back to my retailer, who tested it on one of there machines (PC/Win2000), and there machine reported it as an 80 GB drive. They said something about older BIOS not being able to see all those GB's, but this is a Mac.
Anyone know what's going on here??????

Check the jumper settings on Maxtor's web site, don't trust the ones that came with the drive. I have installed 6 different Maxtor drives and only 2 of them had the correct jumper settings in the box. IIRC there should be two jumpers not just one, 3 drives had only one. The last Maxtor drive I installed (a 60GB) showed up as only 31.something when I followed the settings in the box. After changing it to what their web site showed it showed up correctly as 57.something. FWIW Macs don't have a problem with larger drives until you get up to >128GB drives which require ATA-133. Hope this helps.

Wow, thanks dude!!!
I initially kind of panicked cause I only had one jumper instead of the two you mentioned, but repositioning the jumper solved the problem...

Mmmm, 140 G's...yummy!!! :)
