When I download an audiobook from iTMS, the iPod successfully recongnizes it as an audiobook.
Not so when I copy one of mine ripped from a CD although id3 tags equal
What to do?

iTunes doesn't have built-in a decoder for AudioBooks.
However, you can use this script (http://www.malcolmadams.com/itunes/scripts/scripts02.php?page=2#audiobooker) to rip AudioBook tracks from CDs correctly, and then sync them to your iPod.
Let us know how it goes.

To make the ipod think a file is an audiobook, you need to change the file extention and the type of file.
use Fileinfo (http://www.versiontracker.com/dyn/moreinfo/macosx/15448)
to alter them - change the extention of the file from ".m4a" to ".m4b " (with the space after the b) and the filetype to "M4B ".
that should work.

The space is not necessary after the '.m4b' suffix. The filetype is optional and can easily be adjusted by selecting iTunes as the opening application.
BTW: The suffix '.m4b' is only used for Apple protected AAC audio files. If converting an AAC audio file from outside of iTunes, use the suffix '.aa' to identify it.
