MacCentral has live updating (http://maccentral.macworld.com/news/0205/14.server.php) of the Apple press event, where the new rackmount server hardware 'Xserve' is being announced.

I'm sure we'll hear more about this throughout the day.

Highlights:

"...The server will have a dual 1GHz G4 processor, 256K L2, 4MB DDR L3 caches. System controller with custom ASIC done by Apple. Built-in: Gigabit Ethernet and FireWire. That controller has up to 2GB DDR SDRAM. (This is the first time that we know of that that SDRAM has been used in a 1U server.) In addition, it will have a PCI slot with gigabit Ethernet. This means server comes std. with two gigabit Ethernet ports. Quad ATA/100 drives, all on independent controllers and all have independent channels into system controller; a CD-ROM and 2 64-bit/66MHz PCI slots."

Base model - $2999.00

OK, folks. Surely there must be opinions on this product. I know I'm seriously lusting after one of these (http://www.apple.com/xserve/). Though I'll probably wait until Jaguar Server is released.

David Coursey (http://www.zdnet.com/anchordesk/stories/story/0,10738,2865677,00.html) thinks the Xserve could get Apple back into places that left some time ago. So do I.

What do you think? I'll start a poll if there's interest.

I want one on my desk :-).

Not sure how much it will penetrate Intel's realm, but it's a very very cool machine.

Hello,

I am seriously considering one of these. I'm going to wait how the lineup ends up after MWNY, depending on that I'll either buy a tower or one of these puppies.

Two things, It should run MacOS X normally, but I'm sure the admin utilities will only run under server. The second is that I'm a bit turned off about the radion card, as it's very hard to find another AGP card (apple supposedly sells them, but I don't know the secret handshake).

So all in all I'll wait after MWNY, as I am in the market for a new computer.

If one were to go to the Dell site and price out the feature set that comes with Xserve, anyway I'm coming out with a price (without os) of $4500....and I'm not able to match all the features on Apple's feature list.

The only negatives:
Would like to see exportable aqua so this machine can be run headless.
Would like to see ability to add two more nics
