Haven't yet gotten an Ipod. Turned off by the way it must work through Itunes.

SO if you have an Ipod you must use the system's hard drive (not external)? How stupid, if so.

It is easy to use an external drive for iTunes. See e.g. this article (and comments) on the main macosxhints site:

I haven't tried it, but I fail to see what the problem would be with syncing an iPod with iTunes when you have the music on an external drive.

I have tried it, and I can confirm that you can use an external hard drive with iPod+iTunes.
