I just wanted to share my experience of my iPod going bad and my experience with Apple Care. I am a Marine and I was recently at the rifle range for my annual qualification. I was sleeping on the top bunk and used my iPod to put me to sleep at night. When I was ready to fall asleep, I would wrap my iPod in a t-shirt and put it between the headboard and matress. One night I woke up and as I was attempting to climb down to use the bathroom, the matress slipped and my iPod dropped and hit the ground from about 10 feet up with a heart dropping thump. I immediately freaked out and ran towards the iPod expecting it to be split wide open. It was actually in perfect condition, as it had hit the down on its bottom right corner. I turned it on and found it playing the last song perfectly. I was still in a half sleep half awake mode and after seeing that the iPod was good I went to the bathroom and back to sleep. The next day I went to complete the last day of qualifications and when I came back to the barracks I turned my iPod on and thats when my worst fears cames true. I turned the iPod on and tried to play a song but all it would do was cycle through each song, showing me all the ID3 tag info, without playing anything. I was in a panick state and tried to do what little troubleshooting I knew. After about an hour I gave up and waited until I got home. I had a four hour bus ride home with no iPod and it sucked. When I got home and immediately search the web for any help. When I turned my iPod on after getting home I noticed that now it wouldn't even show my songs. Instead I put it to my ear and noticed the hard drive making some weird sounds. After a few seconds I saw the folder with exclamation mark icon for the first time. I did a search and found out this meant the iPod couldn't find an OS or file system.

To make a really long story short, I usually don't by Apple Care protection but I was so glad that I decided to with the iPod. I did a repair request online and within two weeks, sent my iPod to Apple and got it back. I actually got a brand new iPod from them (actually I don't know for sure if it was brand new or refurbished but either way it was in perfect condition). I was hoping for a new 4G but hey I can't complain. I am now happy (the iPod completes me :D ). I did the same with the white spots on my wife's Powerbook G4 and it took even less time.

In one short sentence, Apple Care is awesome. :)
