Surprising that here there are not a lot of disatisfied folks. On an ipod site i was looking at many people had my same problem: after 2 weeks songs started skipping then the 40g (generation? I don't know, no buttons, just the touch pad) ipod froze completely, wouldn't even turn off. I attached it to my mac via firewire still no response. I put the comp to sleep and went to bed. In the morning when i woke up the comp the ipod had the don't disconnect logo but was not recognized by itune. It did show up on my desktop, however. I wiped the drive clean and reinstalled the software and i ended up getting the language menu. I did a reset and hooked it up to the comp and it showed up in itunes and reinstalled all 3000 songs. I used it for about a day, heard a few skips in songs and though, here we go again. In fact, after about a minute frozen again. I'm really pissed. If you search the internet for this there are a lot of folks with the same problem. And please, the headphones that come with the ipod are ridiculous.

Is this a help request or a rant? Sounds like a rant to me. The only people you should be ranting to is Apple.

I'd suggest you take the iPod in for servicing. We're unlikely to be able to psychically fix it for you from here.

I suppose it was a question hidden in a rant, the question being, should I have faith in the iPod and carry on with reformatting or take it back? Or in other words, is this behavior normal? From other sites i've read, it is, though it surely is annoying.

I think if the behavior was normal, they wouldn't be selling like crazy, and your thread wouldn't be so unusual at places like this. But you may have a bad one. Take it in for service, or exchange, if you can.
Or you can always return it and buy something else if you're dissatisfied.

It doesn't sound normal, I have 3 iPods (2nd Gen, 4th Gen & a Mini) in my house with no problems. I also know about 6 other people that have one all with no problems. You have to remember that those with problems are going to be more vocal than those without problems. So 10 people that have an issue will fill a forum with bitching while the 1000 people that love them will never be at the forum in the first place.

I concur with CRA. This is abnormal iPod behavior and you should take it back to them for servicing.

I guess the reason i was questioning it was i was looking at a place called the ipod forum or ipod lounge or something. In the problem section there were a lot of folks (or what seemed like a lot -you are right, the vocal bunch) who had this same problem. I got the impression it was sort of behaviour you had to live with as they were discussing ways to get around this problem. I wasn't really satisfied with the idea of having to reformat the drive all the time (obviously). So yes, you are all right, i'm taking the thing back.
thanks again

I'd say take in for service. I've had my iPod 3G for a long time now, and the only time it froze up on me was my fault. I had a bad mp3 file in there. However, once I formatted the drive and restored my songs sans corrupted mp3 file, the iPod never froze up again.

And please, the headphones that come with the ipod are ridiculous.
In my humble opinion, the Apple earbuds are the best sounding [non-pro] earbuds out there. I believe this has even been proven when compared to 3 other top-of-the-line earbuds, including the "In-Ear" earbuds.
Of course, earbuds are not comparable to headphones, when it comes to top, top-quality.

you may be right, between my ipod freezing and the buds always falling out of my ears, i didn't have much of a chance to listen to them. http://forums.macosxhints.com/newreply.php?do=newreply&noquote=1&p=155613#
I expected higher quality with such a pricey instrument but maybe I expected too much from a bud.

As far as freezing up from bad mp3's, well, itunes on the comp never freezes up.... Is the ipod all that delicate?

As for the earbuds, I don't think they should be falling out of your ears. I have gone on a 2.5 mile jog wearing them, and one of them came only loose about twice.
(Only brought my iPod running once, since I don't have a clip, and I'd rather not carry it the whole time)
I'd make sure you have them in right. Not trying to make you sound not smart - but if I remember correctly, the iPod manual has good instructions and a pic on how to get them fitting well.
As for the bad MP3 issue, have you noticed the iPod freezing when playing a certain song or album? If so, maybe that'll help you find the bad MP3 if you do have one/many.
My iPod has worked perfectly, and have only had one minor problem: I had a short song playing, but the timebar or numbers weren't moving or counting off. It jumbled/stalled in the beginning, then played fine. I didn't do anything and tried again, and it's been fine since.

about the earbuds but I don't remember seeing anything about it in the manual. As far as the bad MP3's that could be a problem but def. would not freeze the ipod completely, or i wouldn't think so.... I'm going to take it to apple and see what they say and then report back.
thanks for the help

earbuds always fell out when i used my boyfriends 3G, probably because my ears are too small, so i bought the in-ear buds w/my Mini. they work great w/the small size covers and they're wayyyyy more comfortable than the buds, and it seems like they have a lot more depth to the sound
