Judging by your two recent posts, I'd say your friend is quite the kidder.

Apple owns the iPod; they have patent and trademark protection for much of it. They didn't design a lot of the internals, a subcontractor did.

HP is (and maybe Motorola will be) reselling iPods under license from Apple.

Yep. HP brokered a deal with Apple to license the iPod to sell along with it's computers. I think it was a case of "if you can't beat 'em, join 'em". From HP's standpoint, why bother re-inventing the wheel and spend a bajillion on R&D when you can just get a piece of the already tippy-top of the market? A smart business move, IMO.

Next time you see your buddy.. ask him why it's called "Apple iPod from HP (http://www.shopping.hp.com/cgi-bin/hpdirect/shopping/scripts/generic_store/generic_subcategory_view.jsp?landing=null&category=music&subcat1=ipod&catLevel=2&BV_SessionID=@@@@2125835745.1098883621@@@@&BV_EngineID=ccfeadcmlljmkjicfngcfkmdfondfgf.0) " if HP bought it? Wouldn't you call it's HP's iPod or some such if you were HP and owned it? HPod?

Classic case of knowing enough to be dangerous...

It's a good marriage; HP has significant PC market share and a great support reputation, as does Apple. HP has been pushing a lot of Pocket PC devices into the multimedia side of personal electronics. The iPod takes it to the extreme, while the PPCs are more toward the PDA side of course.

Muaha! I just got this! :)

Funnily enough, there's a good seguay here to the original topic of iPods..

The Steve Balmer iPod:
Special docking system spins around in circles leaking sweat and repeatedly flashes "Developers!" on the LCD screen.
