hello all
my friend as purchased the latest 40GB ipod but she uses my mac to import here tunes from itunes using her own user name!! i set the it to manual import because i dont have enough hd space and dont want the ipod updating all the time.
i've now gotta do a new install on me mac, but what will happen when i plug in the ipod afterwards? will it remember i've got it set to manual import? or does itunes contain this info
i thought about trying to keep the prefs for itunes and the ipod and placing them back after the install, will this work or dont i need to do this. it would be a shame if all the hard work comes undone :(
thanx chip

If your friend has her own user name on your Mac, plugging in the iPod will sync whatever she has in her iTunes library with her iPod. I don't understand what you mean by not having enough hard drive space... Syncing the iPod and iTunes will NOT copy songs from the iPod to your computer. It will merely update the iPod with whatever she has in her iTunes library.
I don't know where the iPod settings are stored, but changing the update feature from automatic to manual is a simple matter of selecting a radio button in the iPod Options panel within iTunes.
If I've misunderstood your query, please re-phrase it in order that I may be of more help.

i think chipsteruk is worried that if the setting goes back to auto-sync, music will be lost from the iPod (having been deleted from the computer for storage reasons) I do not know the answer to your question but please correct me if i'm wrong

It sounds like that is indeed his concern. If your library is empty and it is set to auto-sync, it will, in fact, erase all the songs on your iPod. There has to be a workaround for this, to be able to set it to manual BEFORE plugging in your iPod.
I think i read it somewhere, i'll go find out how.

Ok i found it. To disable auto-sync in iTunes for Mac follow these insctructions.
1) Connect iPod to your Mac
2) AS SOON AS IT IS PLUGGED IN -- hold down the "Command" and "Option" keys together. Hold them down for a minute or so, until the iPod is mounted in iTunes, and it's past the point that it would have synced it.
3) release they key combination, right click your iPod in the left pane, go to iPod Options, and set it to manual sync for the future.
You will most likely, at this point, want to put all your songs from your iPod back onto your computer. We can get into this once you set it to manual sync.
Let us know how it goes.

hockey no i dont want to import the ipod back into itunes lol grease aint my thang lol thats what i mean by having lack of hd to keep her itunes upto date and still have enough space for myself :) so i import to the ipod then delete everything from the users itunes :)
i also got a worry that the ipod mite look for myfriends user name, because when i'm in my own user name the ipod tells me its syncd with my friends itunes, not sure what to do if it wont let me change that :(
thanx chip
