View Full Version : iTunes space problem

I have gradually built up a nice iTunes music library on my PowerBook. In fact it is so substantial that it poses problems...

The iTunes library is 41.5 Gb (of 56 Gb available diskspace). In addition, I have 19 Gb of music that I have moved from iTunes to an external Firewire disk.

Can I simply move the whole iTunes library to my external harddisk?
Does this have to be done in any special way?
Can I still have selected Play Lists on my PowerBook? (It would be a pity to be on the road without music!)
Is there a convenient function in iTunes (or elsewere) for copying not just the Play Lists, but the corresponding music files?
Is it best to install iTunes software on both harddisks – each with their own "root" and library?

Do I risk any problems with iPod synchronisation? (I certainly wouldn’t want my iPod synching with an empty or stripped iTunes library!)

I would be grateful for any help!

With best regards,
ArcticStones

PS Does anyone know where I can get iPodDownload 1.1? Supposedly it solves some of the problems I might encounter, and it apparently is compatible with iTunes 4.7.

a little while ago someone came up with the idea of making an iPod disk image that you can sync iTunes with and that way, put the selected playlists on your external onto your internal HD and just mount the "iPod" with manual settings to play its music...

I never tried it, but it's worth a shot...

use your current iPod to CCC it to a disk image so it copies all the necessary stuff

if i remember correctly, the major problem is that iTunes might search for ONLY firewire disks, but there might be a way around this...

My technical understanding here is not deep enough to follow what you’re saying. Don’t think I can fill in those details myself. Wish I could!

basically, let's say your iPod is the 15Gb, in Disk Utility (in Applications->Utilities) select the Firewire Drive of your iPod (when it's mounted, the little orange icon to the right) and select the "Make Disc Image" menu (or something like it) and and do "Make disk image of disk 1 (or whatever)"

I think, this allows you to make a fake iPod that's really just on your computer and allows easy synching from your iTunes Library to the faux-Pod, and allows you to have 15Gb available when you are not plugged into the external...

I hope this is clear for you....

Hey, thanks! The simple logic of this just dawned on me.
