I finally bought an iPod last week (a reconditioned 3rd gen 15Gb from the Apple store whiles on holiday in NY).
Charged it up when back in the UK. All seemed fine - able to scroll through the options etc. Installed the software (iTunes 4.5 and iPod update 2004-04-28)from the CD to my iMac (OSX 10.2.8). iPod update asked me to connect the iPod and choose whether I wanted to update it or reinstall the software.
Tried to mount the iPod via the FireWire connection (which I've never used previously) and everything started going wrong...

The iPod switched on the backlight, started overheating and showed the Do not Disconnect image. The iMac did not recognise I had an iPod connected to it, and would not let me choose betwen the update/restore options. Eventually I resorted to disconnecting it, despite it still showing Do not disconnect.

Since then, the iPod appears to have no software installed. It usually shows the Apple logo but sometimes a file/folder with an explanation mark over it. If I press buttons, you can hear the disk clicking inside, and the battery runs down constantly.
I assume that if I could reinstall the software on it it would be okay, but the iMac still does not recognise any FireWire devises connected. (Although the iPod does now show OK to disconnect when connected to the iMac.)

I've tried updating iTunes to 4.7 and the update iPod software to 2004-08-06, but this has made no difference.

Any ideas - it's a hell of a long way for me to return it to New York!

No need to take the iPod back to the purchase point. Try this WEB PAGE (http://www.apple.com/support/ipod/) for some help with your problem.

Thanks DeltaMac but I already tried all the trouble shooting advice from the Apple support site and iPod instruction manual before posting this message.
I can't find anywhere that refers to an iPod showing a file with explanation mark - any idea what this could mean?

There are two pics with exclamation points on them on that page. If you have tried all the suggested fixes, it sounds like you may have a defective unit.

Thanks very much... think I'm getting somewhere now - that looks exactly like what I'm suffering from.
One (hopefully) final and possibly stupid question, so please bare with me... the page refers to iPod software installed on the computer.
The only software i received with my iPod was iTunes and iPod Update 2004-04-28.
I did ran the basic install of both.
There isn't any other iPod software that I need to install on the iMac before using the Update is there?
