So, I ripped every CD i had. stored a few in my attic, gave a few away, that kind of thing.

All that audio was sitting happily on my iPod for a year or so - then i got it into my head to reinitialise the Pod just, y'know, for laughs…

Now I'm not that silly, I backed everything up 1st. Restored all the MP3s back over - only thing is 1 album (ripped as 'apple lossless') won't go back on.

file suffix is M4a. Tried to change it to MP4 for fun. No good.Changed it to MP3 - still imports to iTunes. Pod won't take it.

Pals - What on EARTH have I done here? I'm way confused!

Have you applied the latest iPod updater?
I recall that the Apple lossless format is something relatively new - so the original iPod software might not know about it.

did that - i did a restore from the latest (20/10/04 i think) updater. all my other files - including a few other AAcs - transfer fine…

ok, so here's how i fixed it:

copied the tracks from my office MDD G4 onto the data side of my iPod.

went home.

copied those tracks into iTunes on my identical MDD G4.

all the same software, all the same everything.

Tried to copy 'em onto the iPod, still no dice.

Selected 'convert to AAC' (which i had tried on my work machine, and they're AACs already!)

Dragged resultant files onto iPod without a problem.

And the lesson we take from this is…?
