I have an application called Editview to look at DNA sequence files on my Mac. At work I use this app on my iMac under 10.1.4 w/ no problem under classic. I decided to work on the files at home on my TiBook using 10.1.4 in classic mode, I emailed the prog and files and when I try to open the files they're not recognised and I can't change the "open with application" dialog for the files to Editview. What have I done wrong? Editview does not look like a valid application in the dialog box (it's grayed out).

...emailed the prog and files...
probably mangled in the ether. perhaps your work's email transport agent is Notes (or worse)? did you stuff/gzip the files first? if they're big files, you might just want to gzip/upload them to some ftp space and get them from there.

its also conceivable the program has prefs or invisible files that need to be installed directly, instead of transferring the application folder.

Yes, I think I will gzip the files and try an alternative route. I lcould just lug my VST firewrie 20 gig HD around with me to and from work and this may be easier and simpler. It's small and light.

Classic Mac application files have a resource fork that is crucial for them to execute. If you zipped, gzipped or mailed these files through a system that does the above the resource fork will be lost, rendering the files useless.
Try stuffing the files (.sit) or packaging them in a compressed disk image (using Disk Copy) to mail or ftp them.
