I have a Formac Devideon 16x DL, external dvd burner (FireWire 400), with a Pioneer AO8 mechanism. I am trying to run it with a G3 iBook and OS X, 10.3.7. When I installed it the System Profiler displayed the following:

ATA/ATAPI Device:

Manufacturer: Formac
Model: ATA/ATAPI Device
Drive Type: CD-RW/DVD-RW
Disc Burning: Not Supported
Removable Media: Yes
Detachable Drive: Yes
Speed: 400 Mb/sec Speed
Unit Spec Id: 24734
Unit Software Version: 10483
Firmware Revision: 1.14

I can't figure out why disc burning is not supported. I tried to burn the dvd using Toast 6 Titanium, and got an Error -50 message. If anyone has any suggestions, I would appreciate it. Thanks!

I think that what you need is this:

Yes. Patchburn 3 will make your drive supported in OS X 10.3.x. You will still need Toast to burn DL discs, but normal DVD recordables wil work fine. Do note that you will have native support in Tiger (OS X 10.4). As to DL support, that we'll just have to wait and see.

Ok, so I d/l Patchburn. Now my profiler says disc burning is vendor supported. However, when I try to burn a blank dvd-r in Toast 6 Titanium, I get a few other errors. The first time, the program froze with 8 seconds left to burn. I could not abort or force quit; I did not get an error code. The second time, I got an error 255 and an error -32765. I also got a message about unstable connection. I thought of burning from the Finder, but the dvd icon does not appear on my desktop or in Finder.

I have successfully burned cd-r, which do show up on the desktop, but am very perplexed by my problems burning to dvd. If anyone has any ideas, or can help me decipher these error codes, I would greatly appreciate it.

Cheers,
Justin

Hi Justin,
I'm sorry I don't have much time today. But if you research the roxio site and look for the meanings to those error numbers you should get some idea, let us know how you get on. I'll have more time by friday.

Regards.
Jim.
