I'm a total newbie with GNOME. When I first installed it using Fink, I wondered why no GNOME windowmaker came up. Then I learned that GNOME is more something like a GUI library other apps are using.

Which windowmaker one runs with it? What are the benefits of installing the GNOME components that aren't installed with GIMP already? What are cool GNOME apps worth taking a look at?

PS: Does one have to run an install script after downloading the GNOME libraries with Fink? Because, I couldn't find one.

Window Managers - Sawfish and Enlightenment both work for me under (through, over, whatever?) gnome

As for cool GNOME apps, I'd suggest installing the gnome-games package through fink. Nothing ground-breaking, but a bunch of fun games (solitaire, mahjongg, tetris, snakes, minesweeper, xbill <- where you try and stamp out all the evil men trying to install windows on the computers). Also, fink install the gnome-applets. They include some fun things, like eyes in the dock, a bunch of clocks (my personal favorite is the binary clock), some system monitors, a couple mailbox checking applets, and some useful utilities, including gdict, which allows you to type in a word and get the definition real quick-like.

If you want to see all the gnome packages that you can install write in terminal:

"fink list gnome"

For example here is mine, you can see which one's I have already installed by the i at the beginning of the file:

Which packages are available depend if you configured fink to use unstable and made a fink selfupdate

To start gnome you can open an xterm and type "gnome-session"

or if you want to start directly in gnome set your PATH in the .xinitrc file,
just add at the end "exec gnome-session"

Was I right with not using any install scripts (like wmaker.inst or something with Windowmaker) w/ GNOME, btw?

How does one know that one has to use install scripts anyway?

PS: Are there any pre-configured WMs where it's easy to get into programms right away?

Yeah, well, playing around and comining that with RTFM really seems to help.

I just exec'd GNOME within XDarwins full screen modus - and, magically, there's the Desktop and everything.

Strange, that within Aqua combination mode it seems only to display certain windows. Performance in full screen is faster (which is quite clear) too.

I have installed windowmaker, tried enlightenment and came back to wm (all installation packages are .pkg from ftp.osxgnu.org). Yesterday I downloaded the complete gnome .pkg from the same site, installed it and ... I fail to make it work ! If I am trying to use it with windowmaker it calls for enligtenment, it I am starting enluightenment or gnome-session (in .xinitrc) it does not work anyway. I failed to find any documentation explaining how to make gnome work with various window managers. Would be very grateful for any help.

Sorry, I can't help you as I don't use the packages from osxgnu.org.

But, if you keep having problems, I suggest you delete what you installed and begin installing with Fink.
